Disney's The Great Mouse Detective
The Great Mouse Detective is a quirky and charming film centered around a Sherlock Holmes-like Mouse named Basil of Baker Street and his arch-nemesis Professor Ratigan.
As a whole, the characters are great. Basil's eccentricity compliments his assistant Dawson's chivalrous and gentlemanly demeanor, the little mouse girl Olivia is adorable, and Fidget the peg-legged bat is quite funny.
But it's the villain Professor Ratigan, voiced by Vincent Price, who steals the show. He is truly a top-tier Disney Villain as he combines a dry wit that is quite amusing with a truly menacing and diabolical nature.
The visuals range from average to very good for the most part, in my opinion. I found myself liking the innovative look of Black Cauldron better but Great Mouse Detective is well-animated with great character design and a scene during the finale involving a clock-tower is stunning and really is a highlight of the film.
Overall this is a family-friendly children's movie but there is smoking and alcohol, mention of drugged drinks, and a part of a song and dance routine with a mouse show-girl that, while mostly quite charming, has a portion that might oddly seem a bit risqué for a children's movie.
This is a very great animated film but a bit less emotionally poignant than classics like Rescuers and Fox and the Hound so I will give it a 9 5.
