Disney's Tarzan review

Tarzan is amazing and its one of my favorites. It especially excels in visual storytelling most notably in its fantastic,  emotional,  and tragic opening.

Visually its one of the best looking movies I ever saw as it seamlessly blends computer animation with traditional 2d animated characters and everything is bright and vibrant and colorful.

The characters too are wonderful and its emotional story-telling about themes of family,  kinship,  and belonging is very poignant and relatable.

Speaking of characters, Kala, Kerchak, and of course Tarzan are fully-fleshed out characters that form bonds and despite Kala and Kerchak being gorillas are extremely human and relatable. The side characters are fun and funny, maybe not as top-notch as side characters in other Disney films but nor do they get in the way of the tone and narrative in the way some, with good reason, might accuse Mushu in the excellent Mulan film of doing.

My favorite character, however,  is Jane. She is so quirky and adorable,  I love her.

Clayton, the villain,  is another mid-tier villain who fulfills his role as a menacing force for Tarzan to contend without being that memorable compared to stronger villains like Jafar or Frollo.

The soundtrack is spectacular as are the songs, mostly performed by Phil Collins. Such a powerful and emotional choice of songs accompany the film and they resonate with the equally powerful visual-storytelling elements to form a moving tapestry that is frankly a masterpiece.

Tarzan, like other films of this era, is probably inappropriately rated. It should be pg instead of g, especially as actual blood is shown. Besides the blood, character deaths, including of an animal child, are strongly implied. A malevolent character dies by accidental hanging and its rather gruesome for an animated film. However I think most children other than the younger ones will love much of this films bright vivid colors, funny characters and humor,  and powerful storytelling.

Tarzan is an underrated masterpiece and one of Disney's most powerful examples of non-verbal storytelling in certain key scenes, especially the opening. Its also such an amazing film in all aspects in my opinion. Love it! A 10 out of 10, for sure!
